Care guide

Sunlight Full sun

Soil / mix Well-drained, fertile loam, neutral to slightly alkaline
Fertilizer Low nitrogen (fixes its own); add phosphorus and potash
Difficulty Easy

Uses

The tender young beans are shelled and cooked in curries, stir-fries, salads and stews, while very young pods can be eaten whole. As a legume it fixes nitrogen, making it an excellent rotation and green-manure crop for the home garden.

Growing tips

Direct sow seeds 4-5 cm deep, spacing them 15-20 cm apart in rows 45-60 cm apart. Germination takes about 7-14 days in cool weather. Stake or support taller plants and pinch out growing tips once pods set to deter aphids. Pods are ready to harvest roughly 90-110 days after sowing, picked young and tender.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow Fava Bean seeds in India?
Sow in the cool season from October to December across the plains, and in spring in the hills. Fava beans need cool weather to set pods and will struggle once temperatures climb in late spring.
Do Fava Beans need a support structure?
Taller varieties grow 1 m or more and benefit from staking or a few canes with twine to stop wind lodging. Dwarf types are sturdier and can be grown in deep pots with minimal support.
