Urograndis (Eucalyptus urograndis) is the celebrated plantation hybrid of Eucalyptus urophylla and Eucalyptus grandis, combining the disease tolerance of the former with the speed and form of the latter. It produces exceptionally fast, straight, uniform growth and is the backbone of high-yield clonal pulpwood forestry worldwide.

In India it is grown in the warm, higher-rainfall and irrigated tracts of the south and east, on deep, well-drained soils where its very short rotations give maximum wood volume for pulp, particleboard and fuel. It is normally multiplied as selected clones, though seedling stock is used to raise rootstock and breeding populations.

  • Family: Myrtaceae
  • Native region: hybrid (E. urophylla × E. grandis)
  • Mature height: 30–45 m
  • Growth rate: very fast

The minute seed needs no pre-treatment; mix it with sand and surface-sow on a sterilised, free-draining medium, leaving it uncovered as light is needed for germination. Keep constantly moist under light shade, and seedlings emerge in about 7–14 days at 25–32 °C. Transplant into polybags at the 2–4 leaf stage and harden off before planting out with the rains.
