Red Mahogany (Eucalyptus pellita) is a medium-to-tall tropical hardwood from northern Queensland, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, prized for its dense, durable, reddish heartwood. It forms a straight bole with rough, fibrous bark and is increasingly planted for sawn timber, flooring, poles and high-value plantation wood.

In India it is grown in the warm, humid tropics of the south and north-east, performing best on deep, well-drained soils with reliable rainfall or irrigation. Because it resists many of the pests and diseases that trouble other tropical eucalypts and is more durable, it is favoured for longer-rotation solid-wood plantations and clonal forestry trials.

  • Family: Myrtaceae
  • Native region: tropical N. Australia & New Guinea
  • Mature height: 25–40 m
  • Growth rate: fast

Seed is very small and needs no pre-treatment; mix with fine sand and surface-sow onto a sterile, well-drained medium, leaving it exposed to light and only barely covered. Keep gently moist and shaded; germination follows in about 7–14 days at 25–32 °C. Prick the seedlings into root-trainers or polybags at the 2–4 leaf stage and harden them off before planting out with the rains.
