Eucalyptus Hybrid (Eucalyptus hybrid, commonly the "Mysore gum" type derived largely from Eucalyptus tereticornis) is the workhorse plantation eucalypt of Indian farm forestry, selected for vigour, straight form and adaptability. It grows rapidly into a tall, slender evergreen with a clean bole, yielding pulpwood, poles, scaffolding, fuelwood and the aromatic leaf oil characteristic of the genus.

It is planted very widely across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana, tolerating a broad range of soils and seasonal moisture once established. Short rotations of 4–8 years make it a favourite block- and bund-planting species for quick cash returns, and it also serves windbreaks and avenue lines.

  • Family: Myrtaceae
  • Native region: hybrid of Australian eucalypts (Indian selections)
  • Mature height: 25–40 m
  • Growth rate: very fast

The dust-fine seed requires no pre-treatment; blend it with sand and surface-sow on a sterilised, free-draining seedbed or tray, leaving it uncovered or only lightly dusted as light triggers germination. Mist to keep evenly moist under part shade and expect emergence in 7–14 days at warm temperatures. Transplant the tiny seedlings into polybags once they have a few true leaves, then harden off for monsoon field planting.
