River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) is a very fast-growing evergreen tree with a tall straight bole, smooth mottled bark that sheds in patches, and slender drooping aromatic leaves. It is one of the most widely planted eucalypts in the world.

Its dense, durable timber is used for construction, poles, fuelwood and pulpwood, and the tree is grown extensively in plantations and on farm boundaries for quick biomass, windbreaks and as a productive bee forage yielding good honey. Highly adaptable, it tolerates both seasonal waterlogging and drought. In India it is planted across the plains and dryland tracts of many states as a short-rotation timber and pulp crop.

  • Family: Myrtaceae
  • Native region: Australia
  • Mature height: 20–45 m
  • Growth rate: Very fast

The seeds are minute and need no pre-treatment, though a brief cold spell can help. Mix the fine seed with sand and surface-sow it thinly on a firm, moist seed tray, pressing it in lightly without burying. Keep the medium consistently moist and lightly shaded; germination takes about 7–14 days. Prick out the tiny seedlings into polybags and grow them on before transplanting to the field.
