Hedera helix, English Ivy, is a versatile evergreen climber prized for its dense, lobed green or variegated foliage that trails gracefully or clings to walls and trellises. A favourite indoor and shade-garden plant, it softens edges of pots, hanging baskets and balcony railings, and is valued as an air-purifying houseplant. It thrives in bright indirect light to part shade with moderate, even moisture. Fast-growing and easy to propagate, it can be trained or pruned to shape. Note that it is mildly toxic if eaten and the sap can irritate skin, so place it thoughtfully around pets and children.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water English Ivy?
Keep the soil evenly moist, watering when the top inch feels dry. Avoid both waterlogging and complete drying out.
How much light does it need?
It prefers bright indirect light to part shade. Variegated types need a little more light, but all dislike harsh direct sun.
Is English Ivy safe for pets?
No, it is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten and the sap can irritate skin, so keep it out of reach of pets and children.
Can I grow English Ivy indoors?
Yes, it is an excellent indoor and air-purifying plant for bright indirect light, hanging baskets and shelves.
How do I propagate it?
Take stem cuttings with a few leaves and root them easily in water or moist soil within a couple of weeks.
Why are the leaves browning or crisping?
Crispy brown leaves usually mean low humidity, dry soil or too much heat and sun. Increase humidity, water consistently and move to cooler shade.
Why does my ivy have webbing or speckled leaves?
That is typically a spider mite infestation, common in hot dry air. Rinse the foliage, raise humidity and treat with neem or insecticidal soap.
When should I repot it?
Repot every 1-2 years in spring when roots fill the pot, moving to a slightly larger container with fresh mix.
How do I keep it bushy?
Pinch and trim the stems regularly; pruning encourages branching and prevents it from becoming leggy.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed a balanced diluted fertilizer about once a month during spring and summer; reduce feeding in winter.
