Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) is a tall, fast-establishing evergreen tree with a straight trunk, glossy serrated leaves and small fringed flowers followed by bright blue fleshy fruits. Inside each fruit is the hard, deeply furrowed stone that becomes the sacred rudraksha bead.

The tree is grown above all for these seeds, which are revered in Hindu tradition and strung as prayer beads, and the plant also has ornamental value and uses in traditional medicine. Quietly handsome with its blue fruit and dense foliage, it makes a fine specimen and avenue tree. In India it grows in the moist sub-Himalayan foothills, Bengal, the north-east and parts of the Western Ghats, favouring high rainfall and deep, well-drained soils.

  • Family: Elaeocarpaceae
  • Native region: Sub-Himalayan and north-east India
  • Mature height: 15–25 m
  • Growth rate: Moderate to slow

The stony seed is notoriously slow and erratic to germinate because of its extremely hard coat. Clean off all pulp, then scarify the stone or soak it for several days, changing the water, to soften it. Sow about 2–3 cm deep in moist, well-drained mix kept warm and shaded; germination commonly takes 30 days or more, often several months. Be patient, keep the medium evenly moist, and pot on seedlings as they appear.
