Uses

The tender pods (drumsticks) are a staple in sambar, dals and curries, while the iron- and vitamin-rich leaves are cooked as a green or dried into nutritious powder. Flowers are edible too, and every part is valued in Indian traditional medicine.

Growing tips

Soak seeds for 12-24 hours, then sow 2-3 cm deep directly in a large pot, grow-bag or ground spot. Germination takes about 7-14 days in warm weather. Space trees 2-3 m apart in ground; in pots grow one per large container and prune the top at 1-1.5 m to keep it bushy and pickable. Pods appear within 8-12 months; leaves can be harvested in 2-3 months.
