Dieffenbachia seguine, commonly called Dumb Cane, is a popular indoor foliage plant grown for its large, oval leaves boldly marked in cream, white and green. Its upright, leafy habit makes a strong statement on floors and tabletops in homes and offices. Dieffenbachia is easy to grow in bright indirect light and forgives occasional neglect. The sap, however, contains calcium oxalate that irritates the mouth and throat, hence the name Dumb Cane, so keep it away from children and pets. In India it grows lush year-round with warmth, humidity and protection from harsh direct sun and cold.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Dieffenbachia?
Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil dries, usually every 5-7 days. Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged.
Is Dieffenbachia dangerous?
Its sap contains calcium oxalate that strongly irritates the mouth and throat. Keep it away from children and pets and wash hands after handling.
How much light does it need?
Bright indirect light is best. Direct sun scorches the leaves, while very low light causes leggy, pale growth.
Why are the lower leaves turning yellow?
Some lower-leaf loss is natural. Excessive yellowing usually means overwatering or cold, so adjust watering and keep it warm.
How do I propagate Dieffenbachia?
Cut the cane into sections with a node, let cut ends dry briefly, then root them in moist soil or water.
Why are the leaf edges browning?
Low humidity, dry air or salt build-up are common causes. Raise humidity and flush the soil occasionally to remove salts.
When should I repot it?
Repot every 1-2 years in spring as it outgrows its pot, using fresh rich, well-draining potting mix.
Can I keep Dieffenbachia outdoors?
Yes, in shaded, frost-free spots with filtered light. Protect it from direct afternoon sun and cold winter nights.
How do I fertilize it?
Feed with a balanced diluted liquid fertilizer once a month during the warm growing season; avoid feeding in winter.
Why is my plant leaning or leggy?
It is reaching for light. Move it to brighter indirect light and rotate the pot regularly for even, upright growth.
