Dieffenbachia 'Tropic Snow' (a selection of Dieffenbachia amoena), commonly called Dumb Cane, is a striking evergreen foliage plant grown for its large, broad leaves heavily marked with creamy-white and pale-green variegation along the midrib. It forms an upright, cane-like clump and is one of the most reliable indoor plants for the warm, humid conditions found across much of India.

Tolerant of low to moderate indoor light, it thrives in bright rooms with filtered light and quickly becomes a lush statement plant. It is widely used to green up living rooms, lobbies and office interiors. Note that all parts contain irritant sap, so it should be kept away from young children and pets.

Soil / mix Rich, well-draining potting mix of garden soil, compost and coco-peat or sand; pH slightly acidic to neutral.
Temperature Ideal 18-29 C. Protect from cold below 12 C and from cold drafts.
Humidity Prefers moderate to high humidity (50%+); mist leaves or group plants during dry weather.
Fertilizer Feed a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring-monsoon); stop in winter.
Pruning Remove yellow or damaged lower leaves. Wear gloves and avoid sap contact when cutting.
Repotting Repot every 1-2 years in spring into a slightly larger pot when roots fill the container.
Propagation Easily propagated from stem (cane) cuttings or by dividing offsets; root in moist soil or water.

Growing tips

In Indian summers (March-June), keep the plant out of direct sun and mist regularly as indoor air becomes dry; water more often but never let it stay waterlogged.

During the monsoon, reduce watering and ensure the pot drains freely to prevent root rot. In North Indian winters, move it to the warmest, brightest indoor spot and protect from cold drafts below 12 C. Wipe the broad leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them glossy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dieffenbachia 'Tropic Snow' safe for pets and children?
No. All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals; chewing the leaves or sap causes severe burning and swelling of the mouth and throat. Keep it well out of reach of children and pets, and wash hands after handling.
How much light does it need indoors?
It does best in bright, indirect light but tolerates moderate to low light, making it ideal for living rooms and offices. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which scorches and bleaches the variegated leaves.
Why are the lower leaves turning yellow?
Occasional yellowing of old lower leaves is natural. Widespread yellowing usually signals overwatering or poor drainage; let the top few centimetres of soil dry between waterings and ensure the pot drains freely.
