Uses

Grown purely as an ornamental for vibrant winter colour in beds, borders, edging and containers. The fringed flowers are long-lasting as cut blooms and many varieties carry a pleasant clove-like fragrance.

Growing tips

Sow seeds 3-5 mm deep in seed trays or directly in pots filled with well-drained potting mix. Germination takes about 7-14 days at 18-22°C. Transplant seedlings when they have 4-6 true leaves, spacing plants 15-20 cm apart. Pinch early growth to encourage bushiness; plants begin flowering roughly 60-75 days from sowing and continue right through the cool season.
