Dianthus, often called pinks, is a compact cool-season flower with frilled or fringed blooms in shades of pink, red, white and bicolours, many with a sweet clove-like fragrance. Forming neat mounds of slender blue-green foliage, it flowers freely through the Indian winter and spring in pots, edging and bedding displays. Hardy and undemanding, it loves full sun, cool weather and well-drained soil. Compact and tidy, dianthus is ideal for borders, containers and rock gardens, offering reliable colour and charm with very little effort during the comfortable months of the year.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water dianthus?
Water moderately, letting the soil surface dry between waterings. Dianthus dislikes soggy soil, which causes root rot.
How much sun does dianthus need?
It prefers full sun but tolerates light shade. Good light keeps it compact and flowering well.
Is dianthus safe for pets?
Dianthus is mildly toxic to cats and dogs and the sap can irritate skin, so keep pets from chewing it.
Does dianthus need repotting?
Grown mostly as a winter annual, it rarely needs repotting; just pot up seedlings once into their final container.
How do I propagate dianthus?
Grow annual types from seed. Perennial and named varieties can be propagated from soft stem cuttings.
Why is my dianthus not flowering?
Insufficient sun, hot weather or old spent blooms reduce flowering. Give full sun and deadhead regularly to encourage new buds.
When does dianthus bloom in India?
It blooms through the cool winter and spring months, roughly November to March in the plains.
Can dianthus grow indoors?
It is best outdoors in full sun. A very bright balcony works, but it will not thrive in dim indoor light.
Is dianthus toxic if eaten?
It is mildly toxic and can cause stomach upset if eaten, so keep it away from young children and pets.
What fertilizer is best for dianthus?
Feed lightly every three to four weeks with a balanced fertilizer during the flowering season; avoid heavy nitrogen.
