Delosperma congestum, often sold as 'Gold Nugget' ice plant, is a compact, ground-hugging succulent from the Aizoaceae family. It forms dense evergreen mats of small, plump, light-green leaves that stay attractive year-round and spread slowly to cover bare soil.
In spring and early summer it bursts into masses of glossy, golden-yellow flowers that open in sunshine and close in dull weather. The plant is exceptionally drought-tolerant and thrives on neglect, making it a favourite for rock gardens, edging, containers and green roofs.
In Indian conditions it does best in hill stations and northern winters; in hot, humid plains it is grown as a potted succulent in sharply drained soil with protection from heavy monsoon rain.

Care guide
| Sunlight |
Full sun, at least 5-6 hours of direct light daily for best flowering and compact growth. |
| Watering |
Low. Water only when soil is fully dry; allow to dry out between waterings. Avoid waterlogging, especially in the monsoon. |
| Soil / mix |
Very well-drained, gritty/sandy succulent or cactus mix; add sand or perlite. Will rot in heavy, water-retentive soil. |
| Temperature |
Thrives in 10-25 C; tolerates light frost and cold winters but dislikes prolonged hot, humid heat above ~35 C. |
| Humidity |
Prefers low humidity; high humidity and stagnant air encourage rot and fungal problems. |
| Fertilizer |
Minimal. A weak, low-nitrogen succulent feed once in spring is enough; over-feeding causes leggy growth. |
| Pruning |
Trim back leggy or spent stems after flowering to keep the mat dense and tidy. |
| Repotting |
Repot every 2-3 years in fresh gritty mix, ideally in spring; choose shallow, wide containers. |
| Propagation |
Easy from stem cuttings or division; let cuttings callus a day, then root in dry, gritty mix. Also from seed. |
| Pests & problems |
Generally pest-resistant; watch for mealybugs, aphids and root rot from overwatering. |
| Toxicity / safety |
Generally considered non-toxic to pets and humans; not known to be poisonous. |
| Difficulty |
Easy |

Growing tips

Plant in spring after frost in the hills, or at the start of the cooler season in the plains. Use a raised bed or pot with sharp drainage so winter and monsoon water never pools at the roots.

During the Indian monsoon, move potted plants under cover or to a rain-sheltered spot to prevent rot. Keep watering minimal in humid weather. Give it the sunniest position available for the most flowers.
