Gulmohar (Delonix regia), the flame tree or flamboyant, is a fast-growing deciduous tree with a broad, umbrella-like crown of fine, fern-like bipinnate leaves and spectacular clusters of large scarlet-and-orange flowers that blaze across the canopy in summer. Long, woody pods follow the bloom.
It is one of the most popular ornamental and avenue trees in the tropics, planted for its brilliant flowering display and the dense shade of its spreading crown. Tolerant of heat and drought once established, it is also valued for roadsides, parks and large gardens. Across India it is grown in towns and cities throughout the plains and coastal regions, flowering through the hot pre-monsoon months.
- Family: Fabaceae
- Native region: Madagascar
- Mature height: 10–12 m
- Growth rate: Fast
The large seeds have a very hard coat and need pre-treatment: either nick or scarify the coat, or pour near-boiling water over them and let them soak for 24 hours until swollen. Sow the swollen seeds about 1–2 cm deep in polybags or a seed tray of well-drained mix; germination is then quick, usually 7–14 days. Grow the seedlings on in pots and transplant the sturdy young trees to a sunny site.
