Golden Cypress is the golden-foliaged form of Cupressus macrocarpa (Monterey Cypress), grown for its dense, conical habit and soft, feathery sprays of bright lemon-yellow to golden-green foliage that release a fresh lemony scent when brushed. In Indian nurseries it is most often sold as the cultivar 'Goldcrest'.
Compact and slow to moderate growing in containers, it is widely used as a decorative potted conifer on balconies, terraces and entrances, and is especially popular around Christmas and New Year as a living indoor-outdoor 'Christmas tree'. It performs best in cooler, well-lit spots and dislikes intense, prolonged summer heat.

Care guide
| Sunlight |
Bright light; full sun in cool climates, but part/filtered shade during harsh Indian summer afternoons to prevent foliage scorch. |
| Watering |
Keep soil evenly moist, never waterlogged. Water when the top 2-3 cm is dry; reduce in winter. Avoid both drying out and soggy roots. |
| Soil / mix |
Well-drained, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soil; a mix of garden soil, compost and sand/cocopeat works well in pots. |
| Temperature |
Prefers 10-25 C; tolerates mild frost. Struggles above 35 C and in hot, dry plains summers. |
| Humidity |
Moderate humidity preferred; mist occasionally in dry air. Dislikes hot, arid conditions. |
| Fertilizer |
Feed monthly in spring and monsoon with a balanced or slightly acidic fertilizer; avoid feeding in peak summer heat and winter dormancy. |
| Pruning |
Light trimming in spring to maintain shape; never cut back into old bare wood as conifers rarely resprout from it. |
| Repotting |
Repot every 2-3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot with fresh, free-draining mix. |
| Propagation |
Usually from semi-hardwood cuttings; can be grown from seed but cuttings keep the golden form true. |
| Pests & problems |
Watch for spider mites in hot dry air, plus aphids, scale and root rot from overwatering or poor drainage. |
| Toxicity / safety |
Foliage is generally regarded as mildly toxic if ingested and the sap can irritate skin; best kept away from pets and small children. |
| Difficulty |
Moderate |
Uses

Golden Cypress is grown almost entirely as an ornamental in India:

Decorative potted conifer for balconies, terraces, patios and entrances.

Living Christmas / New Year tree that can be decorated and reused for years.

Accent or focal point in cool-climate gardens and hill-station landscapes.

Foliage adds fragrance and texture; can be lightly clipped into formal cones.

Growing tips

In the plains, place it where it gets bright morning sun but shade from intense afternoon heat in April-June, and increase watering and misting through the hot months to prevent browning. During the monsoon, ensure pots drain freely to avoid root rot. Feed and lightly prune in spring (Feb-Mar) when new growth starts. In cool hill regions it can take full sun and even light frost. Avoid sudden moves between deep indoor shade and harsh sun.
