Cupid Peperomia (Peperomia scandens) is a compact, semi-trailing tropical houseplant prized for its small, heart-shaped, waxy leaves. The variegated form carries soft cream-to-yellow margins around glossy green centres, lending a fresh, decorative look to indoor spaces.

A member of the pepper family, it stays small and slow-growing, making it perfect for hanging baskets, tabletops and shelves where its slender stems can cascade. It thrives in the warm, humid conditions found across most of India and tolerates the average light levels of indoor rooms.

Low-maintenance and forgiving of occasional neglect, it is an excellent choice for beginners and busy plant lovers who want greenery without demanding care.

Care guide

Sunlight Bright, indirect light; avoid harsh direct sun which scorches leaves and fades variegation. Tolerates moderate indoor light.
Watering Allow top 2-3 cm of soil to dry between waterings. Water moderately; reduce in winter. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
Soil / mix Light, well-draining potting mix; equal parts coco peat, garden soil and perlite or sand. Good drainage is essential.
Temperature Comfortable at 18-30 C. Protect from cold below 10 C and from hot, dry afternoon sun.
Humidity Prefers moderate to high humidity (50-70%). Mist occasionally or group with other plants in dry indoor air.
Fertilizer Feed a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season (spring-monsoon).
Pruning Pinch back leggy stems to keep the plant bushy and encourage branching. Remove yellowing leaves as needed.
Repotting Repot every 2-3 years or when root-bound; prefers a snug pot. Use fresh well-draining mix.
Propagation Easy from stem or leaf cuttings rooted in water or moist potting mix during warm months.
Pests & problems Watch for mealybugs, spider mites and occasional fungus gnats; treat with neem oil spray and avoid overwatering.

Uses

Cupid Peperomia is grown mainly as an ornamental indoor plant in India.

Decorating shelves, desks, windowsills and tabletops with cascading variegated foliage

Hanging baskets and macrame planters where trailing stems can spill over

Adding greenery to bright bathrooms and kitchens that offer humidity

Low-maintenance gifting plant for beginners and office spaces

Growing tips

Place near an east or north window with bright, filtered light; in India keep it away from the harsh summer afternoon sun.

During the hot, dry pre-monsoon months, mist the leaves and check soil moisture more often. In the monsoon, ease off watering as humidity rises and the mix stays damp longer to avoid root rot.

Reduce watering and stop feeding through the cooler winter months, and shift the plant indoors away from cold draughts in northern India.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cupid Peperomia safe for pets and children?
Yes, Peperomia scandens is generally regarded as non-toxic to cats, dogs and humans, so it is a good choice for homes with pets and small children.
How often should I water Cupid Peperomia in India?
Let the top 2-3 cm of soil dry out before watering. In summer this may be twice a week; during the monsoon and winter water less often to prevent root rot.
Why are the leaves losing their cream variegation?
Too little light causes leaves to turn fully green, while harsh direct sun can scorch them. Place it in bright, indirect light to keep the variegation vivid.
