Uses

Crisp fruits are eaten raw in salads, raita and sandwiches, and add a cooling element to summer meals. Cucumber is hydrating and low-calorie, making it a kitchen-garden favourite.

Growing tips

Sow seeds 2-3 cm deep, 2-3 seeds per spot, spacing hills 45-60 cm apart, and provide a trellis for vining. Germination takes 5-10 days. Cucumber is best direct sown as it dislikes root disturbance. Train vines upward, water consistently to avoid bitterness, and harvest fruit young from about 50-65 days for the best flavour.
