Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii) is a hardy succulent shrub with thick, woody, sharply spined stems and small oval green leaves clustered near the tips. Its true flowers are tiny, but they are framed by showy, long-lasting bracts in red, pink, yellow, white or coral that appear almost year-round in good light. Extremely drought-tolerant and undemanding, it is perfect for sunny windowsills, balconies, rockeries and low-water gardens. The milky sap is a skin and eye irritant and is toxic if ingested, and the spines are sharp, so handle with gloves. With minimal care it rewards growers with continuous colour and tough resilience.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water it?
Water only when the soil has dried out, roughly weekly in heat and less in cool weather. It stores water and dislikes soggy roots.
How much light does it need?
It loves full sun and bright light. At least 4-6 hours of direct light keeps it compact and flowering well.
Is Crown of Thorns safe for pets?
No. The milky sap is toxic and irritant if chewed or contacted, and the spines can injure, so keep it away from pets and children.
How do I repot it?
Repot every 2-3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot with a gritty, fast-draining mix, wearing gloves to avoid sap and spines.
How do I propagate it?
Take stem cuttings, rinse off the sap, let the cut end dry for a few days, then plant in dry, gritty mix to root.
Why is it not flowering?
Low light is the main reason. Move it to a sunnier spot, avoid overwatering and give a light feed in the growing season.
When does it bloom?
With enough light it can flower almost year-round, with the heaviest displays during the warm, bright months.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, on a bright sunny windowsill it does well indoors as long as it gets several hours of direct light daily.
Is the sap dangerous?
Yes, the milky latex irritates skin and eyes and is toxic if swallowed, so always handle the plant with gloves.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed with a dilute balanced fertilizer about once a month during the growing season; avoid feeding in cool, dormant periods.
