Croton Zanzibar (Codiaeum variegatum 'Zanzibar') is a distinctive croton with very narrow, ribbon-like leaves that arch and cascade, giving the plant a soft, grassy texture. The slender foliage is streaked in green, gold, orange and red, creating a fountain of colour that contrasts beautifully with broad-leaved plants. Its fine form makes it a favourite for accent pots, balconies and tropical garden beds in India. Zanzibar needs bright light to keep its colours vivid and prefers warm, humid conditions with steady moisture. Like other crotons it resents cold draughts and sudden environmental change, but settles into a striking, full clump with consistent care.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Croton Zanzibar?
Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil dries, keeping the mix evenly moist. The narrow leaves show stress quickly if it dries out fully.
How much light does it need?
Bright light with a little morning sun keeps the ribbon leaves brightly striped. Low light makes colours fade to plain green.
Is Croton Zanzibar safe around pets?
No, it is toxic to pets and humans if chewed, and the sap irritates skin. Keep it away from animals and children.
When should I repot it?
Repot every 1-2 years in spring when root-bound, into the next pot size with fresh well-draining mix.
How do I propagate Zanzibar?
Take 10-15 cm stem-tip cuttings and root them in warm, humid conditions with rooting hormone and bright indirect light.
Why do the thin leaves brown at the tips?
Low humidity, dry soil or salt build-up cause tip browning. Raise humidity, water more evenly and flush the pot occasionally.
Does Croton Zanzibar flower?
It may produce small insignificant cream flowers, but it is grown for its colourful foliage and rarely blooms indoors.
Can it be grown indoors?
Yes, in a bright spot indoors, and also outdoors in bright, frost-free positions.
Is the sap harmful?
Yes, the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Use gloves when pruning and wash hands afterward.
How should I fertilize it?
Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season and ease off in winter.
