Uses

Tender young pods are cooked as a fresh vegetable in sabzis, while mature dried beans are used in curries and dals. As a legume it improves soil fertility and makes an excellent rotation or intercrop.

Growing tips

Sow seeds 2-3 cm deep directly where they will grow, spacing 10-15 cm apart (give pole types a trellis). Soak seeds overnight to speed sprouting; germination takes 3-7 days. Cowpea resents transplanting, so direct sow. Tender pods are ready to pick in 45-60 days; harvest regularly to keep more pods coming.
