Copper Leaf Croton (Acalypha) is a fast-growing ornamental foliage shrub grown for its strikingly coloured leaves in shades of copper, bronze, red, green and cream. Unlike true crotons, its appeal lies entirely in the boldly patterned, often serrated foliage rather than flowers. It makes an excellent informal hedge, border or container specimen and responds well to regular trimming, which intensifies leaf colour. Native to tropical regions, it loves warmth, bright light and humidity, performing superbly across most of India. Easy to grow and quick to fill space, it adds year-round colour and contrast to gardens and landscapes.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Copper Leaf Croton?
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially in summer. Avoid letting it dry out completely or sit in water.
How much sunlight does it need?
It needs full sun to bright partial shade for the best leaf colour; too much shade makes foliage dull and green.
Is it safe for pets?
Being a Euphorbiaceae member, its sap can irritate and it is mildly toxic if eaten, so keep curious pets away.
Does it need repotting?
In containers, repot every 1-2 years into fresh fertile soil and a slightly larger pot to support fast growth.
How do I propagate it?
It roots easily from softwood or semi-hardwood stem cuttings taken during the warm growing season.
Why are the leaves dropping?
Leaf drop is often due to cold, drought stress, sudden light changes or overwatering. Maintain warmth and steady moisture.
Does it flower?
It produces small, insignificant reddish catkins; it is grown for its colourful foliage rather than its flowers.
Can it be grown indoors?
It can grow indoors in a very bright spot, but colour and bushiness are far better outdoors in good light.
Is the plant toxic?
The milky sap can irritate skin and eyes and it is mildly toxic if ingested, so handle with care and wash hands.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed with a balanced NPK fertilizer monthly during active growth to keep foliage lush and richly coloured.
