Coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) is a fast-growing foliage plant loved for its dazzling leaves in an enormous range of colours and patterns, from fiery red and pink to lime, burgundy and chocolate, often with contrasting edges. Easy and rewarding, it brings vivid, season-long colour to beds, borders, hanging baskets and pots. It grows well in part shade to bright light and is simple to propagate from cuttings. Pinching the tips keeps it bushy and removing flower spikes prolongs leaf vigour. A staple of Indian ornamental gardens, it provides instant, low-cost colour in shaded spaces.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Coleus?
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially in summer. It wilts quickly when dry, so water whenever the surface starts to dry out.
How much light does it need?
Bright indirect light or morning sun with afternoon shade gives the richest colour. Deep shade dulls the foliage and harsh sun can scorch it.
Is Coleus safe for pets?
No, it is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, so keep it away from pets.
How do I keep it bushy?
Pinch the growing tips regularly and remove flower spikes; this encourages branching and lush foliage.
How do I propagate it?
Take stem cuttings and root them in water or moist soil; they root within a week or two very easily.
Why is my Coleus flowering?
Flowering is natural but drains the plant's energy. Pinch off the blue-lilac flower spikes to keep the leaves vigorous and colourful.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, in a bright spot with indirect light. It is mostly grown outdoors but does well as a colourful houseplant too.
Why are the colours fading?
Faded colour usually means too little light. Move it to a brighter spot with some gentle morning sun.
How long does a Coleus plant last?
It is often grown as a seasonal plant, but you can keep it going for years by taking fresh cuttings regularly.
How often should I fertilize?
Feed every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer during active growth to support its fast, colourful foliage.
