Culinary — tender young pods are cooked as a popular Indian vegetable; the plant also enriches soil by fixing nitrogen and is grown as a green manure and fodder crop.

Growing tips

Sow seeds June to July (with the monsoon) or in summer where water is available. Direct sow 2-3 cm deep, spacing seeds 10-15 cm apart in rows 30-45 cm apart; soaking seed overnight speeds sprouting. Germination takes 5-10 days in warm soil. No transplanting is needed. Start picking tender pods about 50-70 days after sowing, harvesting regularly to keep the plant productive.
