Citrus maxima, the Pomelo, Shaddock or Chakotra, is the largest of all citrus, a spreading evergreen tree with big leathery leaves, large fragrant white flowers and very large pale-green to yellow fruits with thick rind and sweet-tart, pink or white pulp.

It is grown for its refreshing fruit, eaten fresh and in salads, and the tree is also valued as a shade and dooryard ornamental for its bold foliage and fragrant bloom; the rind yields candied peel and essential oil. In India it is common in the warm, humid regions of the north-east, West Bengal, the eastern and southern states and parts of the west coast, thriving on deep, well-drained soils in a tropical to subtropical climate.

  • Family: Rutaceae
  • Native region: Southeast Asia
  • Mature height: 5-15 m
  • Growth rate: Moderate

Use fresh seed from ripe fruit, since citrus seed loses viability quickly. Wash off the pulp, soak the large seeds for 12-24 hours and peel the outer coat to speed germination, then sow about 1-2 cm deep in a well-drained tray or polybag kept warm and moist. Germination takes around 14-21 days, often with several seedlings emerging per seed; grow on the strongest and transplant when 20-30 cm tall.
