Citrus pseudolimon, the Galgal or Hill Lemon (Khatta), is a vigorous, spiny small tree or large shrub of the citrus family bearing large, thick-rinded, intensely sour yellow fruits. It is a hardy hill citrus long cultivated in the lower Himalaya.
It is grown for its very acidic juice, used in pickles, squashes, sherbets and as a souring agent, and the tree is also widely valued as a hardy, disease-tolerant rootstock for grafting sweet oranges, lemons and other citrus. It is best known from the foothills and mid-hills of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the north-western plains, thriving on well-drained soils in a subtropical climate with cool winters.
- Family: Rutaceae
- Native region: North-western Himalayan foothills of India
- Mature height: 3-6 m
- Growth rate: Moderate
Citrus seeds are short-lived and must be sown fresh from ripe fruit. Wash off the pulp, soak the seeds in water for 12-24 hours and peel the outer seed coat to speed and even out germination, then sow about 1 cm deep in a well-drained tray or polybag kept warm and moist. Germination takes about 14-21 days, often with several seedlings per seed; transplant the strongest once 15-25 cm tall.
