Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium), the beloved Guldaudi or Shevanti, is a cool-season flowering favourite across India. It produces masses of rounded, daisy-like or pompon blooms in yellow, white, bronze, pink, purple and red atop bushy, aromatic lobed foliage. Flowering mainly in autumn and winter as days shorten, it is grown in pots, beds and as cut flowers, and is central to festivals, garlands and pooja offerings. With bright light, cool temperatures and pinching for bushiness, it gives a spectacular, long-lasting display. Easy and rewarding, it is a staple of Indian winter gardens and balcony container collections.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Chrysanthemum?
Keep the soil evenly moist, watering when the top layer starts to dry. Avoid wetting the flowers and foliage to prevent mildew.
How much sunlight does it need?
It needs bright light or full sun for about 5-6 hours daily, but flowering is triggered by shortening day length in autumn.
Is Chrysanthemum safe for pets?
It is mildly toxic to cats and dogs and can cause vomiting or skin irritation, so keep pets from chewing it.
How do I repot it?
Repot or divide clumps yearly after flowering, using rich, well-drained soil and a fresh pot for vigorous spring growth.
How do I propagate it?
Propagate from soft tip cuttings in spring or by dividing established clumps after the flowering season.
Why won't my mum flower?
Chrysanthemums are short-day plants; stray night light, too much heat or late pinching can delay or prevent autumn-winter blooms.
When does it bloom?
It flowers mainly in autumn and winter as days shorten, which in most of India means roughly October through January.
Can I grow it indoors?
It can flower indoors near a bright window for a season, but it performs best outdoors or on a sunny balcony.
How do I keep it bushy?
Pinch out the growing tips two or three times in early growth to encourage branching and many more flower buds.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed every 1-2 weeks with a balanced feed during growth, then switch to a phosphorus-rich feed as buds form for better blooms.
