Christmas Palm (Adonidia merrillii), also called Manila Palm, is a graceful, compact feather palm with a smooth grey trunk topped by a neat crown of glossy, arching pinnate fronds. Its name comes from the showy clusters of bright red fruits that ripen around the winter holidays, set off by a green crownshaft. Smaller and tidier than the coconut palm it resembles, it suits gardens, avenues and large containers. Self-cleaning and relatively low-maintenance, it thrives in India's warm, humid plains. It needs sun to part shade, regular water and well-drained soil, and is sensitive to cold and frost.
