Growing tips

Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in clusters in pots or trays. Seeds germinate in 10-21 days (be patient). Thin to small clumps spaced 10-15 cm apart. Begin snipping leaves once clumps are 15 cm tall, about 60-80 days from sowing; always leave a few cm so they regrow. Divide established clumps every couple of years to keep them vigorous.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow chives seeds in India?
Sow in the cool season, roughly September to February, in most of India. In mild climates and shaded balconies chives can be kept going much of the year as a perennial.
Can I grow chives indoors or on a windowsill?
Yes, chives are one of the best windowsill herbs. A small 6-inch pot with 4-5 hours of light and steady moisture will give you snippable leaves for months.
