Radermachera sinica, popularly called the China Doll or Emerald Tree, is an evergreen ornamental valued for its lush, glossy, fern-like foliage made up of many small, pointed leaflets. Though it can grow into a small tree in its native habitat, in Indian homes and gardens it is kept compact as a tabletop or floor plant.
It is one of the most popular indoor foliage plants in India because it tolerates typical living-room conditions, stays neat and bushy with light pruning, and adds a soft, leafy texture to bright interiors. It rarely flowers indoors but its dense green canopy is the main attraction.
Best grown in bright, indirect light with steady moisture, it suits balconies, well-lit rooms and shaded patios across most Indian cities.

Growing tips

Place near a bright window with filtered light but away from scorching afternoon sun. During the hot Indian summer keep the soil consistently moist and mist the foliage, as dry air and heat cause leaf drop.

Feed and prune actively from spring through the monsoon when growth is strongest. In winter, water less and shield the plant from cold drafts. If lower leaves drop after a move, give it time to adjust to the new light and avoid frequent relocation.
