Uses

Stalks are eaten raw in salads or added to soups, stir-fries and stocks; the leaves season curries, soups and salads. Low in calories and a good source of fibre.

Growing tips

Surface-sow the tiny seeds or barely cover them (about 0.3 cm) in trays; keep moist and warm, as germination is slow at 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings at the 4-5 leaf stage, spacing 20-25 cm apart. Celery needs constant moisture and feeding for tender, non-stringy stalks. Begin harvesting outer stalks and leaves about 100-120 days after sowing.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow celery seeds in India?
Sow from September to November in the plains for a cool-season crop; celery dislikes heat. In hill regions it can also be sown in spring.
Why is celery slow and how do I get tender stalks?
Celery germinates and grows slowly, so be patient and keep seeds warm and moist. For tender, non-stringy stalks, never let the soil dry out and feed regularly.
