Toona ciliata (syn. Cedrela toona), the Indian Cedar, Toon or Red Cedar, is a large fast-growing deciduous tree of the mahogany family with a tall straight bole and a spreading crown of pinnate leaves. It is one of India's most valued indigenous timber trees.

Its fragrant, reddish, easily worked wood is prized for furniture, panelling, plywood, musical instruments and tea chests, and the tree is also planted as a shade and avenue species and in agroforestry. It grows naturally in the sub-Himalayan tracts and moist deciduous forests from the Himalayan foothills through central, eastern and southern India, favouring deep, moist, well-drained soils.

  • Family: Meliaceae
  • Native region: Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia
  • Mature height: 20-30 m
  • Growth rate: Fast

The small winged seeds need no chemical treatment but lose viability quickly, so sow fresh. Surface-sow or barely cover them (a few millimetres) on a fine, moist, well-drained seedbed or tray and keep lightly shaded; germination follows in about 14-21 days. Prick the seedlings into polybags when they have two or three true leaves and transplant to the field during the rainy season once 25-40 cm tall.
