Casuarina junghuhniana, the Mountain She-oak (locally called Rhu), is a fast-growing evergreen tree with fine, drooping, needle-like branchlets very similar to the common Casuarina but better suited to inland and slightly elevated sites. Like its relatives it fixes atmospheric nitrogen through Frankia and tolerates poor soils.

It is grown mainly for pulpwood, fuelwood, charcoal and poles, and is a leading species in clonal farm-forestry plantations in southern India, especially Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, where superior clones give very high biomass yields on short rotations. It also serves as a windbreak and shelterbelt tree. It thrives across the warm plains and lower hills on well-drained ground.

  • Family: Casuarinaceae
  • Native region: Indonesia (Java and the Lesser Sunda Islands)
  • Mature height: 20-35 m
  • Growth rate: Very fast

The minute winged seeds require no pre-treatment. Surface-sow them thinly onto a moist, sandy seedbed and press in lightly without covering, keeping the bed shaded and evenly damp; germination takes about 7-14 days. Transplant the fragile seedlings into polybags while small, harden them off, and field-plant at 30-45 cm tall with the onset of the rains.
