Cassia renigera, the Burmese Pink Cassia or Woody Shower, is a small to medium deciduous tree of the legume family prized for its profuse pink flowering. When largely leafless in the dry season the spreading crown is smothered in soft pink, almost peach-toned blossoms borne on the bare twigs, creating a striking display in gardens and along roadsides.

Its use is chiefly ornamental and for landscaping: it is planted as a compact flowering avenue and specimen tree where space is limited. Native to Myanmar, it adapts well to the warm plains of peninsular and central India, tolerating dry spells once established and favouring full sun and free-draining soil.

  • Family: Fabaceae (Caesalpinioideae)
  • Native region: Myanmar (Burma)
  • Mature height: 6-10 m
  • Growth rate: Moderate

Seeds carry a hard coat that blocks water uptake. Scarify each seed or treat with hot water and soak overnight before sowing, then place 1-2 cm deep in a free-draining seed tray. Expect germination in about 14-21 days under warm conditions; prick out and transplant the seedlings to polybags or the field once they reach 20-30 cm and have hardened.
