Cassia nodosa (now often treated as Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa), the Pink-and-White Shower or Java Cassia, is a medium-sized deciduous flowering tree of the legume family. In late spring and early summer the bare or semi-bare crown erupts into dense clusters of rose-pink blossoms that fade to white, making it one of the most spectacular ornamental and avenue trees grown across India.
It is valued almost entirely for landscaping: as a flowering avenue, park and garden specimen it rivals the Gulmohar for colour. The long cylindrical pods that follow hold the hard-coated seeds. It thrives in the warm plains of southern, central and eastern India and along the western coast, preferring well-drained soils and full sun.
- Family: Fabaceae (Caesalpinioideae)
- Native region: Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent
- Mature height: 10-18 m
- Growth rate: Moderate to fast
The seed has a hard, impermeable coat and must be pre-treated. Nick (scarify) the seed or pour near-boiling water over it and let it soak overnight until swollen; sow the swollen seeds about 1-2 cm deep in a well-drained tray or polybag. Germination takes roughly 14-21 days in warm conditions, and seedlings are transplanted to their final position once they are 20-30 cm tall and the monsoon has set in.
