Cassia glauca (Cassia glauca, also treated as Senna surattensis), sometimes called the Scrambled Egg tree or Sunshine tree, is a fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree that flowers almost throughout the year with cheerful clusters of bright yellow blooms above bluish-green pinnate foliage. Its near-continuous flowering and neat, bushy habit make it a popular plant for gardens, hedges, road dividers and quick screening.

Native to Southeast Asia and parts of India, it is widely planted across the warm plains of the country, tolerating heat, dry spells and ordinary soils. It is grown chiefly as an ornamental and flowering hedge, and as an easy, low-maintenance avenue and landscape shrub.

  • Family: Fabaceae (Caesalpinioideae)
  • Native region: Southeast Asia and India
  • Mature height: 3-7 m
  • Growth rate: Fast

The seeds have a hard coat, so soak them in water for about 24 hours (or nick them lightly) before sowing. Sow around 1 cm deep in seed trays or bags of well-drained mix in spring or summer; germination usually takes 1-3 weeks. Prick out and grow on the seedlings, then plant them out once they are sturdy.
