Indian Senna (Cassia angustifolia), known as Sanay or Sonamukhi, is a small, fast-growing perennial shrub of the legume family with pale green pinnate leaves, yellow flowers and flat, broad pods. It is cultivated on a commercial scale for its leaves and pods, which are the source of the world-famous senna laxative and a major medicinal and export crop of India.
Native to the drier parts of the Indian subcontinent and Arabia, it is grown extensively in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Gujarat on light, sandy, well-drained soils under hot, dry conditions. Its leaves and pods are harvested, dried and used in herbal medicine, while the hardy plant also tolerates drought and poor ground well.
- Family: Fabaceae (Caesalpinioideae)
- Native region: Indian subcontinent and Arabia
- Mature height: 0.6-1.5 m
- Growth rate: Fast
The hard seed coat germinates better after light scarification or soaking in water for 12-24 hours. Sow the seeds about 1-2 cm deep directly into a well-prepared, well-drained seedbed in summer or with the early monsoon; germination usually takes 1-2 weeks. Thin or transplant the seedlings to spacing once established, and begin harvesting leaves as the plants mature.
