Yellow Oleander (Cascabela thevetia, formerly Thevetia peruviana), called Pili Kaner in India, is a fast-growing evergreen large shrub or small tree with willow-like glossy green leaves and funnel-shaped, fragrant yellow (sometimes apricot) flowers borne almost year-round. It is widely planted for quick colour, screening and hedging, though every part of the plant is highly toxic if ingested and should be kept away from children and livestock.

Originally from tropical America, it is now naturalised and commonly grown throughout the warm plains of India, thriving in heat, drought and poor soils. It is used chiefly as a hardy ornamental and flowering hedge and as a tough plant for road dividers and coastal gardens.

  • Family: Apocynaceae
  • Native region: Tropical America (naturalised across India)
  • Mature height: 3-6 m
  • Growth rate: Fast

The flat, hard, nut-like seeds benefit from soaking in water for 24-48 hours, or light scarification, to soften the woody coat before sowing. Sow about 2 cm deep in bags or trays of well-drained mix kept warm and moist; germination usually takes 3-4 weeks. Handle the seeds and seedlings carefully because of their toxicity, and transplant once they are well rooted.
