Growing tips

<p>Direct-sow seeds thinly about 0.5-1 cm deep in deep, loose soil; keep the surface moist for germination, which takes <strong>7-14 days</strong>. Do not transplant. Thin seedlings to 5-7 cm apart once they are 5 cm tall so roots can swell. Avoid stony soil and fresh manure, which cause forked roots. Roots are ready to harvest about <strong>70-90 days</strong> after sowing.</p>

Sow from August to November in the plains for a winter crop; cooler temperatures give sweeter roots. In hill regions, carrots can be sown spring through summer.
Can I grow carrots in containers?
Yes, use a pot or grow bag at least 12 inches deep with loose, stone-free soil. Sow directly, thin the seedlings, and keep the soil evenly moist for straight roots.
