Calathea ornata 'Pinstripe' is a striking evergreen foliage plant from the Marantaceae (prayer-plant) family, native to the tropical rainforests of South America. It is grown for its glossy, deep-green leaves elegantly etched with thin pink or white pinstripe lines and rich purple undersides, making it one of the most decorative indoor plants.

Like other prayer plants, it gently folds and raises its leaves at night and lowers them by day, a natural movement called nyctinasty. In Indian conditions it thrives indoors in bright, indirect light away from harsh direct sun, and rewards consistent warmth, humidity and even moisture.

It is a non-toxic, pet-friendly choice that suits living rooms, bathrooms, study tables and shaded balconies, and is popular in tropical and humid Indian cities where it grows year-round.

Growing tips

In India, keep it indoors near a bright window with filtered light, never in direct sun.

During dry summers (Mar-Jun) and heated/dry winter air, raise humidity by misting, using a pebble tray or grouping plants; brown leaf edges usually mean the air is too dry or the water too hard. Use filtered or rainwater if your tap water is hard or chlorinated. The monsoon is the best season for active growth, repotting and division. In winter, reduce watering and keep it away from cold drafts.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the leaf edges of my Pinstripe Calathea turning brown?
Brown, crispy edges are usually caused by low humidity, dry air or hard/chlorinated water. Raise humidity with misting or a pebble tray and water with filtered or rainwater.
Is Calathea ornata Pinstripe safe for pets?
Yes. Calatheas are non-toxic to cats, dogs and children, making this a safe, pet-friendly houseplant.
How much light does a Pinstripe Calathea need indoors in India?
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Keep it near a filtered window but out of direct sun, which scorches the leaves and fades the pink stripes.
