Calathea concinna 'Freddie' is an evergreen tropical foliage plant grown for its strikingly patterned leaves. Each elongated, lance-shaped leaf is pale green and marked with alternating dark-green fishbone stripes, carried on slender stalks that give the plant a soft, upright, clumping habit.
Like other prayer plants, 'Freddie' is nyctinastic: its leaves rise and fold together in the evening and lower again by morning, an attractive daily movement. It thrives in the bright, indirect light and warm, humid conditions found in most Indian homes, making it a popular low-light tabletop and shelf plant.
Pet-friendly and non-toxic, it is a safe choice for households with cats, dogs and small children, valued more for its lush foliage than for flowers, which are rarely seen indoors.

Care guide
| Sunlight |
Bright, indirect light; protect from direct sun which scorches and fades the leaves. Tolerates medium light. |
| Watering |
Keep soil lightly, evenly moist; water when the top 2-3 cm feels dry. Avoid soggy soil and complete dry-out. |
| Soil / mix |
Light, airy, well-draining mix; peat/coco-peat with perlite and compost. Keep slightly acidic and never waterlogged. |
| Temperature |
Ideal 18-29 C. Protect from cold below 15 C and from cold drafts/AC vents. |
| Humidity |
Loves high humidity (60%+). Group plants, use a pebble tray or mist; dry air browns leaf edges. |

Feed a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season (spring-monsoon); none in winter. |
| Pruning |
Snip off yellow, brown or damaged leaves at the base with clean scissors; little other pruning needed. |
| Repotting |
Repot every 1-2 years in spring when rootbound, moving up one pot size with fresh mix. |
| Propagation |
By division of the rhizome/clump at repotting time; keep divisions warm and humid to establish. |
| Pests & problems |
Watch for spider mites (in dry air), mealybugs, aphids and fungus gnats; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap. |

Growing tips

In most of India, grow 'Freddie' indoors in bright, indirect light away from harsh afternoon sun.

During the hot, dry pre-monsoon months (Mar-Jun), raise humidity with a pebble tray or regular misting and use room-temperature, low-salt water (filtered or rainwater) to prevent crispy brown edges. The warm, humid monsoon is the best growing and dividing season; feed lightly through it.

In winter, reduce watering, stop feeding and keep the plant away from cold drafts and unheated rooms below 15 C.
