The Peacock Flower or Red Bird of Paradise (Caesalpinia pulcherrima), known in India as Guletura, is a fast-growing ornamental shrub or small tree that flowers almost year-round with showy heads of crinkled red, orange and yellow blooms tipped by long red stamens. Its airy, fern-like bipinnate foliage and continuous flowering make it a favourite garden, hedge and roadside plant in warm regions.
Originally from tropical America, it has long been naturalised and widely planted throughout India, thriving in heat and dry, well-drained soils. It is grown chiefly as an ornamental and flowering hedge, strongly attracts butterflies, sunbirds and bees, and various parts have traditional medicinal uses.
- Family: Fabaceae (Caesalpinioideae)
- Native region: Tropical America (naturalised across India)
- Mature height: 3-6 m
- Growth rate: Fast
The seeds have a hard coat, so nick or scarify them or pour hot water over them and let them soak for 24 hours before sowing. Sow about 1 cm deep in seed trays or bags of well-drained mix in spring or summer; germination usually takes 1-3 weeks. Transplant the seedlings once they have a few true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle.
