Bush Allamanda (Allamanda schottii) is a compact, woody evergreen shrub native to tropical South America and widely grown across India for its showy, golden-yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. Unlike the climbing golden trumpet, this species stays bushy and mounded, making it ideal for hedges, borders, and large pots.

It blooms generously through the warm months and, in frost-free parts of India, can flower nearly all year. The glossy whorled leaves and cheerful flowers make it a popular low-maintenance choice for sunny gardens, terraces, and balconies.

Like all Allamandas, every part of the plant contains a milky sap that is toxic if ingested and can irritate skin, so it should be sited away from young children and pets.

Care guide

Sunlight Full sun for best flowering; tolerates light afternoon shade but blooms less.
Watering Keep soil evenly moist in summer; water when the top 2-3 cm dries. Reduce in winter; avoid waterlogging.
Soil / mix Rich, well-drained loamy soil with organic matter; slightly acidic to neutral pH.
Temperature Thrives at 20-35 C; protect below 10 C as it is frost-sensitive.
Humidity Prefers moderate to high humidity; suits most Indian plains and coastal areas.
Fertilizer Feed monthly in the growing season with a balanced or bloom-boosting (high-potassium) fertilizer.
Pruning Prune lightly after main flush to keep it bushy; hard-prune in late winter to shape and encourage blooms.
Repotting Repot every 2-3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot with fresh potting mix.
Propagation From softwood or semi-hardwood stem cuttings in spring/summer; root in moist medium with warmth.
Pests & problems Watch for aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies and spider mites; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Toxicity / safety Toxic if ingested (whole plant); milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Keep away from children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bush Allamanda flower all year in India?
In frost-free regions like South and coastal India it can bloom almost year-round, peaking from spring through autumn. In North India flowering slows in cold winter months and resumes as temperatures rise.
Is Bush Allamanda safe around children and pets?
No. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested and the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Plant it away from play areas and wash your hands after pruning.
Why is my Allamanda not flowering?
The most common cause is too little sunlight. Move it to a spot with 5-6 hours of direct sun, avoid excess nitrogen fertilizer, and feed with a high-potassium bloom feed to boost flowering.
