Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), or Water Hyssop, is a creeping, succulent marsh herb celebrated in Ayurveda as a brain tonic believed to enhance memory, focus and mental calm. It forms a low, spreading mat of small, fleshy green leaves and bears dainty white to pale-purple flowers. Naturally found along water edges and wetlands, brahmi loves moist to waterlogged conditions and even grows in shallow water, making it ideal for bog gardens, ponds and containers. Hardy and fast-spreading, this gentle medicinal groundcover is easy to grow across India and is also used in soothing herbal preparations and teas.

Growing tips

Brahmi loves moisture, so grow it in constantly wet soil, a bog spot, or a pot standing in a water tray; it spreads quickly in warm Indian conditions in sun or light shade.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water brahmi?
Brahmi loves water. Keep the soil constantly wet and never let it dry out; it even thrives in shallow standing water.
How much sunlight does brahmi need?
It grows well in full sun to partial shade. Bright light with ample moisture gives the lushest growth.
Is brahmi safe for pets?
Brahmi is a gentle medicinal herb and generally low-risk, but it is best not to let pets graze on it freely.
When should I repot brahmi?
Repot or divide when the pot becomes crowded; brahmi spreads fast and benefits from occasional refreshing.
How do I propagate brahmi?
It is very easy from stem cuttings or division; pieces with a node root quickly in wet soil or water.
Why is my brahmi drying out?
Brahmi cannot tolerate dryness. Browning or shriveling means it needs much more water and constant moisture.
Does brahmi flower?
Yes, it produces small white to pale-purple flowers, often for much of the year in warm conditions.
Can brahmi be grown indoors?
Yes, in a bright spot with a water tray to keep it wet, though it grows best outdoors with strong light.
Is brahmi toxic to humans?
Brahmi is used as a medicinal herb. Use prepared forms appropriately and consult an expert for therapeutic doses.
How should I fertilize brahmi?
It needs little feeding. A light dose of balanced or organic fertilizer occasionally keeps the foliage healthy.
