Growing tips

Soak seeds 12-24 hours before sowing to speed germination. Sow 2-3 cm deep, two seeds per pit, with pits spaced 1-1.5 m apart along a trellis. Seeds sprout in 7-14 days. Provide strong vertical support early and pinch the growing tip once vines reach 2 m to encourage side branches that carry female flowers. Hand-pollinate in the early morning if fruit set is poor. First harvest comes in about 55-70 days; pick fruit young and tender for the best texture.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow bottle gourd seeds in India?
Sow from February-March for the summer crop and June-July for the monsoon crop. In frost-free regions it can be grown nearly year round; avoid only the peak cold of December-January in the north.
Can I grow lauki in a pot or grow bag on my terrace?
Yes. Use a large container of at least 18-24 inches (40-45 litres) with rich soil and a sturdy trellis. Keep it well watered and fed, and one plant per big pot will fruit well on a sunny terrace.
