Bleeding Heart Vine (Clerodendrum thomsoniae) is a soft-stemmed twining climber prized for its dramatic flowers: pure-white, lantern-like calyces from which vivid crimson blooms emerge, creating a striking two-tone effect. Native to tropical West Africa, it grows well across warm, humid parts of India on trellises, arches and balcony railings, or trained in large pots. The glossy dark-green leaves set off the flower clusters that appear mainly through the warm months. It prefers bright, filtered light and steady moisture, making it ideal for partly shaded patios. Moderately vigorous and easy to train, it can be pruned hard to keep it tidy.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Bleeding Heart Vine?
Keep the soil evenly moist, watering when the surface starts to dry; it dislikes drying out completely but also hates waterlogging.
How much light does it need?
It does best in bright filtered light or gentle morning sun; harsh afternoon sun can scorch the leaves and bracts.
Is it safe for pets?
Clerodendrum is considered mildly toxic if eaten, so it is best to keep curious pets and children from chewing the plant.
When and how do I repot it?
Repot every 1-2 years in spring into a slightly larger pot with rich, well-drained soil to support its climbing growth.
How do I propagate it?
Take softwood stem cuttings in the warm season or use simple layering; both root readily in a humid, warm spot.
Why are the leaves yellowing?
Yellowing often signals overwatering, poor drainage or nutrient deficiency; check drainage and feed during active growth.
When does it flower?
It blooms mainly through the warm months from spring to autumn, with the heaviest flush in warm, humid conditions.
Can it be grown indoors?
Yes, near a bright window it can be grown indoors, though it flowers best with the higher light of a balcony or patio.
How do I get more flowers?
Give it bright light, feed fortnightly in the growing season, and prune after flowering to trigger fresh, blooming shoots.
What pests should I watch for?
Mealybugs, whitefly and spider mites are the main pests; treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
