Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) is an epiphytic tropical fern forming a striking rosette of broad, apple-green fronds that emerge from a central, nest-like crown. The glossy, undivided leaves have wavy margins and a prominent dark midrib, giving a bold, architectural look unlike the lacy texture of most ferns. Native to Southeast Asia's rainforests, it grows naturally on tree trunks and rocks. It is one of the easiest ferns to keep indoors, tolerating lower light and average humidity better than its delicate cousins. Compact and clean-foliaged, it suits shaded balconies, bathrooms and living spaces across India.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water a Bird's Nest Fern?
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, keeping it lightly moist but never soggy. Pour around the soil, not into the central nest, to avoid crown rot.
How much light does it need?
It thrives in bright indirect light to medium shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which scorches and yellows the fronds.
Is the Bird's Nest Fern safe for pets?
Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs and safe for households with pets and children.
When and how should I repot it?
Repot every two to three years when rootbound, in spring, using a loose humus-rich mix and a slightly larger pot.
How do I propagate it?
It is grown from spores found on the undersides of mature fronds; it does not divide like clumping ferns, so propagation is slow and best left to nurseries.
Why are the fronds turning brown or yellow?
Browning often comes from direct sun, dry air or water pooling in the crown; yellowing can mean overwatering. Adjust light and watering accordingly.
Does it flower?
No, ferns do not flower; this plant reproduces by spores and is grown for its glossy foliage.
Can I grow it indoors or outdoors?
It does well indoors and in shaded, humid outdoor areas like balconies. Keep it out of direct sun and cold drafts.
Is it toxic?
No, it is regarded as non-toxic and safe around pets and children.
How should I fertilize it?
Apply a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and monsoon growth, and pause feeding in winter.
