Betel leaf, or paan, is a tropical evergreen climbing vine grown across India for its glossy, heart-shaped, peppery leaves. It climbs supports with clinging roots and produces dense, attractive foliage that thrives in warm, humid, shaded conditions. The leaves are chewed traditionally with areca nut, used in religious rituals, and valued in folk medicine for their digestive and antiseptic properties. A relative of black pepper, it needs rich, moist, well-drained soil and protection from harsh sun and frost. Easy to train on a trellis or tree, betel leaf is a productive, culturally significant vine for warm gardens and shaded courtyards.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water betel leaf?
Keep the soil consistently moist, watering whenever the surface begins to dry, as the vine dislikes drying out.
How much light does betel leaf need?
It prefers partial shade or filtered light; strong direct sun scorches and bleaches the leaves.
Is betel leaf safe for pets?
The plant is best kept away from pets, as the peppery leaves can irritate and are not meant for animal consumption.
Do I need to repot betel leaf?
Repot every one to two years or refresh the topsoil and provide a sturdy moist support for climbing.
How do I propagate betel leaf?
Take stem cuttings with a few nodes and root them in moist, rich soil under warm, humid, shaded conditions.
Why are my betel leaves rotting at the base?
Foot rot comes from waterlogging; improve drainage, avoid overwatering and ensure good airflow around the vine.
Does betel leaf flower?
It rarely flowers in cultivation and is grown purely for its leaves, which can be harvested regularly.
Can I grow betel leaf indoors?
Yes, in a warm, humid, brightly shaded spot with a small trellis it grows well as an indoor or balcony vine.
Is betel leaf toxic to humans?
The leaf itself is edible, but habitual chewing of paan with tobacco and areca nut is linked to serious health risks.
What fertilizer suits betel leaf?
Feed regularly with an organic fertilizer or compost tea during the growing season for lush, glossy leaves.
