Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), locally called Doob or Durva, is a fine-bladed, warm-season lawn grass that creeps by surface runners and underground rhizomes to knit a tough, dense turf. It is the workhorse lawn and playing-field grass of India, prized for standing up to intense sun, drought and constant foot traffic while recovering quickly from wear.

Found throughout the warm plains of India and the wider Old World tropics, it establishes readily wherever there is full sun and adequate drainage. In addition to lawns it is planted to bind soil on slopes and bunds, grazed as fodder, and revered as Durva grass in traditional Ayurvedic and ceremonial use. This 250 g pack suits smaller lawns and patch repairs.

  • Family: Poaceae
  • Native region: India and the Old World tropics
  • Mature height: 10-30 cm (kept low by mowing)
  • Growth rate: Fast, spreading

Because the seed is tiny, work the soil to a fine, firm, weed-free tilth, then broadcast evenly and rake so the seed is only just covered (3-6 mm deep). No pre-treatment is required; water lightly and often to keep the surface moist, and seedlings emerge in 1-2 weeks during warm weather. Sow in late spring or at the start of the monsoon and begin mowing once the grass has filled in.
