Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), known in India as Doob or Durva, is a fine-textured, warm-season turf grass that spreads vigorously by both runners (stolons) and underground rhizomes to form a dense, hard-wearing lawn. It is among the most widely used lawn and sports-turf grasses in the country because of its toughness, quick recovery and tolerance of heat, drought and heavy foot traffic.
Native to warm regions across India and the Old World tropics, it grows almost everywhere in the plains given sun and reasonable drainage. Apart from lawns it is used for erosion control on bunds and slopes, as nutritious fodder, and the plant (Durva) holds an important place in Ayurvedic and ritual use.
- Family: Poaceae
- Native region: India and the Old World tropics
- Mature height: 10-30 cm (mown low as turf)
- Growth rate: Fast, spreading
The seed is very fine, so prepare a firm, level, weed-free seedbed and broadcast the seed evenly, raking lightly so it is barely covered (about 3-6 mm). No pre-treatment is needed; keep the surface consistently moist with light watering and germination follows in 1-2 weeks in warm weather. Sow in late spring or with the early monsoon for fastest establishment, then mow once the turf knits together.
