Begonia 'Escargot' is a spectacular rex-type begonia famous for its large, spiralling leaves that coil at the base like a snail's shell, banded in silvery-grey, deep green and burgundy with a textured, puckered surface. Grown purely for its dramatic foliage, it forms a bold rosette and makes a stunning statement plant for bright, humid interiors. Its parentage traces to Asian rex begonias. It prefers bright indirect light, warmth and high humidity, with careful watering to avoid rot. Reaching about 30 cm, it is best as an indoor showpiece. Note: like other begonias, it is toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Begonia Escargot?
Keep the soil lightly moist, watering when the top 2 cm dries. Water at the base, not on the leaves, to avoid mildew and rot.
How much light does it need?
Bright, indirect light brings out the silver and burgundy colours. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the textured leaves.
Is Begonia Escargot safe for pets?
No, begonias are toxic to cats, dogs and humans if ingested. Keep it out of reach of pets and children.
Why are the leaves developing white powder?
That is powdery mildew, encouraged by stagnant, damp air. Improve airflow, avoid wetting leaves, and remove affected foliage.
How do I propagate it?
Propagate from leaf cuttings or rhizome divisions in warm, humid conditions; rex begonias root readily from leaf sections.
Why are the leaf edges crisping?
Crisp edges indicate low humidity or dry soil. Raise humidity around the plant and keep soil lightly, evenly moist.
Does it flower?
It may produce small pale-pink flowers, but they are insignificant. It is grown entirely for its dramatic foliage.
Can I keep it outdoors in India?
Only in warm, shaded, humid, well-ventilated spots out of direct sun and rain. It is best as an indoor showpiece.
When should I repot it?
Repot every one to two years in spring, using a shallow pot and fresh, airy, well-draining mix.
How do I fertilize it?
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength monthly in the growing season and stop in winter.
